A Shout-Out to One of Our Own…

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Congratulations to our Co-Director of Photography and one of our top photographers: Julie Proudfoot!! She has been slotted to be Vice President next year to the Detroit Professional Photographers Association. She will be President in 2012-2013!!

julie-proudfoot2Julie has been involved with the DPPA for years volunteering, promoting and assisting the board. All that hard work has definitely paid off, but it is not all work. Julie enjoys the DPPA because it’s a chance to interact with other photographers, learn from speakers, and just make new friends.

To top it off recently at the Professional Photographer Association convention Julie took home the 1st Place prize in the Wedding Category and 1st in the Children’s Category.

We would like to thank Julie for putting in the extra work to better herself and her craft.  Congrats Julie!!

Trend Watch: 7 Trends to Watch Out for in 2010

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Most brides can appreciate the fact that trends for 2009 and 2010 keep a budget in mind.  Here are 7 trends to watch out for that will help you save some cash.

#1 Do It Yourself Weddings
diyflowersYou would think brides have enough on their plate, but a new wedding trend that has been popping up on the internet and on bridal TV is brides creating a significant amount of their wedding decor by hand.  Invitations and place cards have been popular DIY items in the past, but this new trends adds jewelry, centerpieces, corsages, bouquets, favors, and many more into the mix.

#2 Jewel Tones

Say good-bye to pale pastels.  Rich gem colors like navy, plum, and amber are beautiful, bold and hot! This is not for the safe and traditional bride, but if you are into taking a risk, you will make a statement with these vibrant colors!  Good news for some brides: according to this trend, black is also allowed!

#4 Two
cake-Tiered Wedding Cakes
While cupcakes and dessert bars have been a popular trend for the past few years, wedding cakes are making a comeback — but not the cliche, over the top, expensive towers anymore.  Order several small cakes and put them on each table as a centerpiece, or set up a table of tiny wedding cakes mixed with desserts, cookies, pies, and more.

#5 Non traditional Centerpiecescenterpieces
Centerpieces are the most likely doom to a budget, so luckily enough for most brides the classic floral vase has given way to mix-and-matched clusters of vintage pitchers, vases, jars, and galvanized buckets.  This is a trendy, bold decor move that will save you money. Uniquely shaped glass vases featuring fresh fruits like raspberries and blueberries are also ideas.

photobooth#6 The Updated Photo Booth

Renting a photo booth(very cool!!) has been growing in popularity over the past few years.  We recommend Shutterbooth. Want to update that idea?  Include photo sets with fabric backdrops and props (think easy-to-throw-on hats and scarves). Set up a photo area at the reception that’s big enough for a group shot.

#7 US Honeymoonsusvaca
This year, another trend to boost your budget is traveling within the US for the honeymoon.  You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to find an amazing honeymoon spot.  There is no shortage of domestic honeymoon-worthy options — from a romantic winery in Sonoma County, California, to a hot hotel in Miami, Florida, to a cozy lodge with a stunning view in Juneau, Alaska.

Gimme a ring sometime!

Monday, September 28th, 2009

There is nothing that symbolizes marriage more than … the wedding ring! A spouse wears it to indicate a marital commitment of fidelity, but have you ever wondered how this tradition started? This symbol of matrimony has been present for centuries … here are some fun facts about the RING.

Gold and Platinum/Silver Rings - Reflected Candles

* Even in the ancient times marriages have been symbolized by wearing a ring.  However, it was usually worn by the woman to indicate she was someone’s possession and could no longer circulate amongst other men.

*Conventionally, an engagement ring was presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride.  It represented a formal agreement to a future marriage.

*Ever grumbled about having to buy both an engagement ring and a wedding band?  Well you can blame Pope Innocent III … who instituted a waiting period between engagement and marriage in the 13th century and also insisted that a ring be used in the wedding ceremony.  Before that, rings were used to seal engagements only.

*Why do Americans put their wedding bands and engagement rings on the 4th finger of the left hands, you ask?  Well, the Romans thought that particular finger held the vena amoris or the “vein of love” which was a direct line to the heart.  The Egyptians shared this insight.

*The most expensive engagement ring purchased cost 4.7 million dollars, which was given to Paris Hilton … which she kept even after she broke off the engagement.

Rings are prevalent in just about all cultures.  Here are a few that are particularly interesting.

hawaiEngraved Hawaiian Rings: Hawaiian couples often wear specially engraved rings decorated with their spouse’s name.

Irish Claddagh Ring: Many have seen this ring, it is a crowned heart held between two hands.  This irishring represents loyalty, love and friendship.  Usually, this is used as an engagement ring, but can be used as a wedding band as well.  It is also often given to someone in order to represent any kind of devotion, including friendship.

Turkish Puzzle Ring: This popular puzzle ring is said to have been developed 2000 years ago by a jealousturkish Turkish traveler determined  to know whether his wife was cheating on him.  The ring was unable to be reassembled if the women removed it from her finger.  Puzzle rings can be made from 4,5,6 or as many as 24 thin, odd shaped pieces that when put together in the right combination is made to look like one ornate ring resembling Celtic knot work.

Indian Bichiya Toe Ring: Toe rings are preferred to finger rings in India.  However, they are not made of gohinduld.  Gold is considered a “respected” metal that is worn by Hindus only on the upper half of their bodies.

retreatLast weekend we hosted our 5th annual company wide party: DJs Gone Wild!!  Each September we truck all of our staff, DJs, Videographers and Photographers up to North Port, Michigan for a 3day/2 night thank you celebration.  We rented out the North Port Bay Retreat, a beautiful 22,000 sq. ft. escape on 6.5 acres of West Grand Traverse Bay.

atiserinadeThe weather could not have been better.  Our days were filled with golfing, kayaking, yard games, and lounging in the sun.  As the sun fell we fired up the bar-b-que, got the campfire rolling, and cranked up the music.

Top 5 WORST Films about Weddings

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Some people wrote to us asking about certain movies about weddings that didn’t make our “BEST” list.  The reason?  They made this list instead.  Once again, my wife, Dani, will guest blog …..

As long as there are weddings, there will be bad movies about them.  I will admit I do not extend cinematic compliments easily, but I strongly do not recommend the following titles if desiring a decent wedding flick.

5.    Sweet Home Alabama
091609I hear some shaking their heads profusely in disagreement.  But, lets be honest.  Everything that is good about this film has absolutely nothing to do with its wedding or wedding scenes. Who accepts McDreamy but needs to divorce McSloppy but then ends the film by punching McDreamy’s mother?  It is too confusing, and ultimately too corny enough to buy.  I actually adore this film (which is why it is so low on the list) but the wedding scene makes me want to RSVP with regrets.

4.    American Wedding
0916091This film is also low on the list because … I am very much aware that no one watches this film expecting anything more than a raunchy romantic comedy that includes more sex scenes and shock factors than good acting or beautiful wedding scenes.  To be fair, the movie is funny, but is by so far the worst of the three in the “American”  series … and not one to watch when you want a respectable wedding film.

3.    Wedding Date
0916092I don’t remember what this movie was about … because I fell asleep!  This movie included every single thing needed to make a bad movie: bad acting, bad dialogue, boring plot.  All three combined to create a character whose life was so pathetic she had to hire a date for her sisters wedding … and we didn’t care.

2.    Made of Honor
0916093This movie was made already… it was called My Best Friend’s Wedding … and it was done 10x better than the gender reversal take on this awkward situation, that barely worked the first time!  For goodness sake, you would know if you were in love with your best friend BEFORE he/she got engaged, and if you didn’t you are an idiot and should keep your mouth shut, not attempt to make TWO movies on the subject.

1.    Bride Wars

BW_B_Eng1sht (Page 1)There are films like Runaway Bride … The Wedding Planner … who no one could argue that they are chick flick, romantic comedies, girly films to their cores.  But, at least they attempted (at times succeeded) at tackling larger themes.  Its not just like someone realized it was wedding season and decided “hey, I have billions of dollars at my disposal, lets call two big actresses and make a movie that is about announcing wedding season … make sure it has no plot what-so-ever.”  Bride Wars was purely a propaganda film for the wedding industry.  I would like to take this moment to say: We don’t need your help, the wedding business is booming without the help of your horrible films!  Bottom line: I am never going to get my two hours back I lost while watching this movie.

A Once in a Millennium Moment

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

9-9-09 …Obviously enough, that only happens once in a millennium, but one of our newly hitched couples made that date even more special… they made it their anniversary.  If you’re checking your day planner, it was this past Wednesday - yes, a Wednesday for a wedding!!  All around the world couples flocked early to have this memorial and historically lucky number combination as their day in history. Here in Detroit, this day brought more than just luck for our happy couple:

One of our DJs, Kevin Joynt, was able to make this day a little more special because of his eye or we’ll say ear for detail. He remembered his couple mentioning Billy Joel as a choice favorite.  After pre-alerting the crowd to note their watches at 9:00pm, Kevin played Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” in perfect timing.  “It’s 9 o’clock on a Saturday….”  (Get it? 9 o’clock on 9-9-09!!) Even though it was a Wednesday, the crowd loved it and the new couple was more than pleasantly surprised.

Add a late night snack of French bread pizza and a sparkler lit, videoed send off; and that’s a date everyone will remember.
