There is nothing that symbolizes marriage more than … the wedding ring! A spouse wears it to indicate a marital commitment of fidelity, but have you ever wondered how this tradition started? This symbol of matrimony has been present for centuries … here are some fun facts about the RING.

Gold and Platinum/Silver Rings - Reflected Candles

* Even in the ancient times marriages have been symbolized by wearing a ring.  However, it was usually worn by the woman to indicate she was someone’s possession and could no longer circulate amongst other men.

*Conventionally, an engagement ring was presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride.  It represented a formal agreement to a future marriage.

*Ever grumbled about having to buy both an engagement ring and a wedding band?  Well you can blame Pope Innocent III … who instituted a waiting period between engagement and marriage in the 13th century and also insisted that a ring be used in the wedding ceremony.  Before that, rings were used to seal engagements only.

*Why do Americans put their wedding bands and engagement rings on the 4th finger of the left hands, you ask?  Well, the Romans thought that particular finger held the vena amoris or the “vein of love” which was a direct line to the heart.  The Egyptians shared this insight.

*The most expensive engagement ring purchased cost 4.7 million dollars, which was given to Paris Hilton … which she kept even after she broke off the engagement.

hawaiEngraved Hawaiian Rings: Hawaiian couples often wear specially engraved rings decorated with their spouse’s name.

Irish Claddagh Ring: Many have seen this ring, it is a crowned heart held between two hands.  This irishring represents loyalty, love and friendship.  Usually, this is used as an engagement ring, but can be used as a wedding band as well.  It is also often given to someone in order to represent any kind of devotion, including friendship.

Turkish Puzzle Ring: This popular puzzle ring is said to have been developed 2000 years ago by a jealousturkish Turkish traveler determined  to know whether his wife was cheating on him.  The ring was unable to be reassembled if the women removed it from her finger.  Puzzle rings can be made from 4,5,6 or as many as 24 thin, odd shaped pieces that when put together in the right combination is made to look like one ornate ring resembling Celtic knot work.

Indian Bichiya Toe Ring: Toe rings are preferred to finger rings in India.  However, they are not made of gohinduld.  Gold is considered a “respected” metal that is worn by Hindus only on the upper half of their bodies.
